Syntactic and semantic mismatches in English number agreement

چکیده

In English, it is possible for a morphologically singular collective noun like government to control both (syntactic) agreement and plural (semantic) in the same sentence (e.g. The government has praised themselves). It been claimed that sentences with opposite pattern of agreeing elements are ungrammatical *The have itself), there corresponding asymmetry corpus frequencies these two configurations. Across acceptability judgement experiments, we show contrast affected by relative order elements, degraded case where first element shows second agreement, configuration. This found when verb precedes reflexive, reflexive verb. Overall, results suggest initial formation semantic dependency between an target controller makes subsequent morpho-syntactic less accessible. We argue any theoretical account would require important role incremental processing.

Dealing with lexical semantic mismatches between Spanish and English

We are going to present a classification of verb centered mismatches between Spanish and English. This classification is based on a proposal for lexical representation of linguistic knowledge and therefore falls within the scope of lexical semantics. Representing Syntactic-Semantic Knowledge from English Texts

We present a unified representational framework LSeN (Language to Semantic Network) for representing syntactic-semantic knowledge extracted from natural language (e.g. English) texts. Our representation is a variant of the standard semantic networks with some important distinctive features that facilitate bridging the interface between syntactic and semantic knowledge using automatic computatio...

An English Dictionary for Computerized Syntactic and Semantic Processing Systems

R. F. SIMMONS (1970) and M. PA~AK and A. W. PRATT (1971) point out that no computerized system using natural language either as part of the processor or as the object processed and having a syntactico-semantic component has a lexicon of more than a few hundred items (except for the SNOV' s medical lexicon). It is obvious from the lack • of success of large-scale computerized systems using natur...
